My interest in mealworms started after hearing a report on the radio about a publication by the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization. It discusses the problem of food shortages, now as well as in the future, and how insects could be used as a way of overcoming the problem.
Some interesting points that caught my attention –
80% of the world’s population already eat insects, it’s mainly westerners that have a problem with it.
Farming insects requires very little land, one of the main issues identified with increasing food needs.
The nutritional value of insects can be very high, mealworms contain many fatty acids, omega 3’s, protein and fibre among others.
The feed required to produce insects, when compared with meat, ranges from a half to as little as a tenth.
